Default No ammonia yet

I am cycling my new 10 gallon with 3 male guppies (I know I know, fishless cycling is better, but I had only read about that after getting the guppies). Anyway, it's been 6 days, and my daily tests still show no ammonia reading. Nitrite and Nitrate are 0 as well. The fish are eating and active. I'm using the API liquid tests. The tank is planted with 3 bunches of anacharis, 2 anubis nana, and a small java fern. Substrate is Floramax from Petsmart. Filter is a Top Fin 10 power filter, and I replaced the carbon in the filter bag with ceramic media. I'm not new to the hobby, but it's been a while. Am I missing something? Any thoughts?

Nope.

With a planted tank the norm is no or low ammonia/nitrIte spikes with a possible initial nitrAte spike.

I also don't add food the first week because when I did the first fish always died on the 5th day. But you seem past that for now.

Keep the feeding light, let that plants thrive and keep us posted.

also what's the pH at?

If your plants are growing and doing well, maybe they are keeping up with your bio-load.

Right now it's at 7.6. My local tap water is actually closer to 8-8.2. I'm thinking about getting a buffer to reduce it to 7.0.

IMHO never never never and repeat never adjust pH with chemicals.

Planted tank have high pH because the plants are sucking out the carbon dioxide. Which can hardly be harmful to the fish.

Just let the tank seek whatever pH is wants to run at.

BB. your 2 cts. are safe!.. Another thing.. Plants derive, contrary to popular belief, most of their nourishment from the ammonia output, consuming it!..
You're on the right road my friend.. and to quote someone from my local fish club.. as far as 10G and 3 guppies?
"The solution to pollution, is dilution".. You've plenty of water to absorb most shocks.. Bill in Va.

Yeah, don't use anything to alter the ph chemically. Planted tanks only have a high ph if the water your putting in your tank has a high ph.....plants don't cause a high ph situation and only alter your tank ph during the times the light is on.

Why, are you planning to get different fish than guppies? Guppies, like most livebearers, actually prefer slightly alkaline water.
