My nitrite and nitrate levels have tested really high what's the best way to reduce the levels quickly and effectively?

Ive done almost a 50% water change today as well as use prime and added aquarium salt to help, not sure what else I can do.

If they are both high then chances are you're tank isn't fully cycled yet and the nitrifying bacteria needs a bit more time to colonize. Nitrites are taken care of by the bacteria in established aquariums, nitrates are taken care of by weekly water changes. Some filter media, i.e. Nitrazorb, can also eliminate both NO2 and NO3.

When you say you have done almost 50%. Please explain how you did this. Did you do 2 lots of 25%, because is not a 50% change. Did you do 50% in one hit? Your information is very vague. What are you levels?

Keep doing 50% water changes each day until the levels test OK. If they elevate again, keep on the water changes. Welcome to the world of establishing an aquarium nitrogen cycle
