Talking New upgrade to 75 gallon!

we are upgrading from our 36 to a 75gl. Bought it last night and started filling it with gravel etc... Now My Bala shark and a couple future ones will have a better home instead of the 36. 75g is going in the living room. Our future 120 gl is ging into the basement onces we have it all fixed up nice. The Bala sharks will most likely go in there since its a much better home for them, even though 75 is good for now.

so excited!

Yea I know. I never get on the internet while I am at home to take and upload any pictures. But I promise I will take a few tonight and post them tomorrow. Atleast of my 36 I will. My 29 gallon is nice too, we've had that over a year. But for some reason when we turn the light on, all my fish scatter and hide! We tried changing to dimmer lights, we added a background(because the back of their tank is exposed and not up against a wall) but it doesnt work. Its only been happening in more recent months. We think maybe the gravel being a pinkish purple, its too bright in tehre for them? I dunno. So Ill take one of that tank too, you just might not see my fish very well. lol

My bleeding hearts all hover in the corner and inside the cave, the silvertips and serpae tetras hover at the bottom and look litterely scared stiff. But when the light goes out, they all come out

Yeah a bright set up tends to make fish nervous. I had white gravel with very colorful fake reef pieces and my flowerhorn cichlid was always in his cave, and when he did come out, he was very nervous about it. At night no problem. I was tired of not seeing my fish, so I replaced the gravel with dark brown and beige rocks, and changed from the reefs to driftwood and fake tree stumps with caves. Totally different fish! He was always out and just floating around as happy as can be. Amazing. Notice I said was, he was so mean I couldn't put any fish in there with him, not even a pleco, so gave him away to a LFS, and now am enjoying a community aquarium!

So its ok to switch the gravel? I always heard it was a bad idea. What's the best way to change it?

Yeah I switched the gravel like two weeks ago and all my new fish are fine. What I did is took like 50% of the water out and then scooped the gravel out with a draining bowl

Okay cool. Well we bought Black gravel actually yesterday to put into that tank. We were either going to completely change it to black, or mix it with the pink/purple in hopes it tones it down alot. The most skiddish fish we have in there are our Bleeding Heart tetras, but they actually just came out last night and went into our new 75 gallon so they seem better in there. They were outgrowing my 29 gallon. They get huge apparently lol.

75 Gallon is all cycled and ready to go! We dont have all the decorations or plants that we want in it yet, but last night we put our 5 Bleeding heart tetras in it to see how they did. They love it. Tonight, our Bala gets to finally have a huge tank he deserves! Ill take pictures!!

Anybody know what can be a good fish(s) to put in there with my tetras and Bala(s) that are like a middle to top dweller? Apparently in this big tank Sharkey hangs a the bottom and so do my tetras. We dont have any action going on in any other part. We wanted to get a couple rams actually because Ive always wanted them and now have a big enough tank. Would they be a good fit? But Ive heard theyre skiddish and need hiding places

My bala and tetras are peaceful fish so Im not worried about the Rams being that way. But do they swim all over? or just hang out in the bottom half
