Hey all! I currently have a male betta in a rather tiny aquarium, and decided to buy a 10gal tank for him and other fish. Particularly, I would like to have 3-6 yo yo loaches with him. (The two species will coexist, according to Tankmates for your Betta .) Some live plants, aquaclear 20 filter, and cave decorations may be added too.
Does anyone have any advice for this set-up? Like how many loaches, plant species, etc. Thank you :D ![]()

Loaches prefer to be in larger groups (at least 5) and get to be 3-5 inches. I would watch your stocking on that one...

I think I'm going to go with three yo yo loaches and the betta in the 10gal (there's no space for anything bigger)
Should I cycle the tank with the betta, the loaches, or both?

take it from me from a bowl to a 5G to a 10G to a 20G to a 55G.... loaches and a betta - yoyos will get too big for your 10 or you wont have all that many. Id go with a 20L and make sure you get the smaller loaches (when they are full grown) I have two clown loaches in my 55G and know one day they will need to be free agents. Also I have a wonderful betta with no issues with several types of loaches and cory cats. The clowns go to the top now and then to do their odd little things like go under the filter sponge that blocks the powerful flow from the two Marineland 350's and there is never an issue with the Betta and them. But go larger...than where you think you will want to be. Its a pain to move up later. In retrospect I should have gone 75 instead of 55!

I can't upgrade the tank :(, so I'll keep an eye out for the scrawny loaches. Thanks for your insight... I'll upgrade when the opportunity arises

I don't think you should cycle with fish at all, but if you must, do one fish at a time. I still say bad idea on the yoyos. too big, and you cant put enough in to make them happy.
