I would go with hatchet fish, the others don't stay at the top as much.

FWIW I liked my hatchetfish but they are jumpers. Had to be careful when I replanted things. Always picked up one or two off the floor.

they considered the only "true" flying fish and actuall flap their fins in the air to get more distance.

the only safe assumption is they could find there way through any opening.

I used a 1/4 square plastic grid (egg crate) to keep them in the tank. I did have heaters through a couple of places andthe egg crate was cut to precisely fit the heater tubes.

sure.

I also had to count them after tank work. if some were missing then check around the tank.

they also would sometime jump up against the eggcrate also.

So actually cool interesting fish. and always near the top.

had

I had 5 silver hatchets in a 20g long. They stayed in the top 1/3 or higher of the tank usually.

the dwarf sunburst plattys were in the bottom 2/3 of the tank.

Of course they all came to the surface at feeding time.

If memory is correct I think they also spit to kill insects (like an archer fish) but not sure.

They are super cute! I love how they 'flap' and don't 'swim'. It's sooo cute!
