Hello I'm new to the forums so time for a long winded explanation as I have a hard time getting right to the point =P
I got a great deal on a 100G tank. I mean, bought it from someone who had no idea what it was great deal. Anyway I have it finally cycled (water para are perfect) and I've finshed stocking it with my previous fish. There are 6 Giant Danios, 6 Tiger Barbs, 3 Pictus Catfish, and 1 beautiful Featherfin Squeaker. Now.. The featherfin hides all the time, course he is a catfish. So my wife has been lusting over these pictus catfish as they seem very very active. 2 weeks ago we got them, put them in the tank and bam, i barely see them as well. Now I am taking steps towards getting a night-time viewing rig up and running but basically this is my question: I really would like a cool looking freshwater (obv) fish that is, well, visible. I love my current fish, don't get me wrong. But I'm at a point where I want to add more as the actual tank activity is limited really to 12 schooling fish in a 100g tank! But I have no idea what to get! I was thinking about Bala Sharks...UNTILL I saw one at the San Antonio Zoo today which was massive to new definitions of the word. But that's my plight, anyone have any ideas on cool fish that are active during the day time? Tank Info :: 0 Algae (But wouldn't be upset with special feeding needs) Water Params right now are perfect (I would go into detail but as no fish seem stressed I don't feel like it atm to be honest, lol) Moderate fake-planting towards the back of the tank, 4 cave-like hiding places (And occupied at the moment, willing to get more if needed) and a nice open wide front for the pictus catfish to (not) swim rapidly. Looking forward to advice =D |

Oh, your tank sounds nice! :D You could always add more of the danios or barbs, but there are others to consider. Have you done any research on tetras? There are several different kinds that are very nice to look at (though smaller ones like neon tetras might be subject to attack by the barbs).
Livebearers are good, too. Mollies and platies are friendly, and they will swim right up to you when you come to the tank, so they're obviously very visible. They also come in a lot of different colors, and you can mix them all (I'm planning on getting five or six platies in my tank, all of different colors).

I am deff. thinking of adding more to my schools but i'm curious if there is more of a "center peice" fish that could be avaliable. I'm very careful about tetras as the catfish can (And will) eat them when fully grown. And I don't mean to upset anyone by saying this BUT I don't want to mix freshies and brackish as I don't believe the salt requirements are fair on either fish =( Otherwise I would have grabbed mollys ages ago =D

if you want more color go for rainbows i like boesemani and they are super compatable with anything and if you want cats you will see go with cory cats also you could get a bottom feeding shark like a red tail or a rainbow but just one if you like night setups you could get some leopard ctenopomas they are fun too i love tetras but dont get any with long fins with those barbs in there if you got rid of the barbs you could do discuss also

I'm not sure about the compatibility with the catfish off the top of my head, but if I had a 100gal tank I'd have a nice school of clown loaches in there.
A common pleco would also do nice in a 100gal and they are not a shy fish, he'd be hanging off your glass most of the time.

+1 on the Angels.... but would the Tiger Barbs nip at them? (I'm thinking that since the tank is so large that they'd be ok....) They do like plants though - most fish do - so I'd consider adding more fake ones, or even get into live plants. They really aren't that hard!
Lemon Tetras are very pretty and Long Finned Serpae Tetras are gorgeous. The Serpae's can be nippy, (but so can tiger barbs). If you get a good size school, in your large tank, I think they'd be just fine. Don't think I'd do a school of Clown loaches, as they get really big... may look a bit funny having a school of huge fish in with all the smaller ones. (Also, may over stock with a school of them.) A common Pleco will do fine in a 100g tank! You could also get several of the dwarf species, such as Clown, Zebra or Bristle Nose Plecos.

It would help with your featherfin to get 3 more of them. They will come out more. Pictus may take a while before they start coming out more. You could also do a school of cories in the tank and with it being a large tank you can do about 10 of the same kind.
Tigerbarbs if the school is big enough they wouldn't bother the angels to much. You might also look into one of the larger species of guarami like the 3 spot or pearl. If you want loaches go with zebra loaches, you could put a nice shoal of them. But as with most loaches they will hide a lot. Unless your wanting a poop machine stay away from a common pleco. There are many nice plecos out there that won't get as big and are really nice looking. Panaques species has some really nice ones. Like the royals or greens just to name a couple.

Sadly I can't do angels for two reasons. My wife hates them *I know I know* and the tiger barbs are natorious fin nippers. They forbid angels... even though my tiger barbs are very un-tiger barblike in their nipping. This just may be as I have a school of them.
The featherfin, I would adore getting more but everything I've read say they are hardcore territorial (Male to Male but sexing them is extremely difficult) and they will fight loads. I'm very interested in the dwarf species of placo but I'm waiting for some alge growth prior to introducing him. What I was thinking was basically this:: Increasing the school size of the danio to 10. And adding more tiger barbs of different colors (i've read they school together so they shouldn't stress) Then maybe one of the dwarf speices of placo at the bottom and possibly corys =P I do love my bottom feeders even if I only catch glimpses of them! |

I kept 4 featherfins in a 75 and had no problems with territorial aggression. They would all hang around together. And if they did get a little territorial they never hurt no one.
When you do get a dwarf pleco, make sure you meet all the requirements they need. They do eat more than just algae. They also need wood and supplement with fresh veggies and treats of bloodworms and such..
