Hello Guys,
Well i just got back from upnorth and WOW the 45 gallon is crystal clear!!! I a m going to test the water and see if the mud and sand haven't changed the water chemistry. The pink convict is completely non aggresive the funny thing is the molly is picking on him/her(idk)! LOL!!! The convict is 4x larger than the molly! Well my friend just told me that her 25 convicts just had a baby boom and now she has 40+ convicts and i am going to take a couple of the babies. maybe 8. seven black(5 female and 2 male) and one pink(male or female). Do think this is fine? There are so many caves and hiding spots in the 45 its seriously not funny. I will never see my baby bn pleco ever again if i put him in there!! But just wow just wow. now i just need plants! |

LOL i used that for my 29 gallon! I was at 324% maximum capacity!! The new tank is big but these guys im getting are probably around not even half an inch and might just get eaten( i hope not). But there is alot of hiding spots!
oh im also probably going to have 3 filters running. my 5 gal , 29 and now the this one! might as well use them there doing nothing right now. i have a bunch of cartridges Oh i might be selling some of my non aggressive fish too when my 29 gallon sells. the black skirts and the molly. I probably should get a couple more tiger barbs. seeing that the one is all alon |

I'm surprised that 8 Gouramis can coexist in a 29 G tank.

Yeah I think you are overstocked.
It does sound like a disaster in the makes.

Why is everyone saying this will be a disaster? The convicts i am picking are ones that are very mellow( like the one i have right now). the mellow ones do not pick on the other fish. But who knows.

The fact you have eight gouramis who are not fighting, leads me to think they are stressed.Adding more fish, even though going to a larger tank, will just add to the stress.

They're saying it because overcrowding leads to stress (for numerous reasons) and stress leads to disease. The healthiest tanks you'll find are well-planted and lightly-to-moderately stocked. It's a principle that's been around for many decades, and it still holds true.

The AqAdvisor may not be the best source, but nothing is perfect when it comes to deciding what is right for your tank and your fish. But when it says you are 324% stocked and you don't even act concerned about it, well.....just adding more fish to it is leading down the wrong path. A 45g isn't that much bigger than a 29g - which if I recall correctly, aren't all the ones in the 29g going into the 45g? Either way, you have nearly enough fish for both tanks. Try to look at it from their perspective.....would you want to live in such a crowded space? Would you expect 4-5 dogs to live in one dog house outside in the Winter? Wall-to-wall fish in an unhealthy tank is NOT very cool at all. I'd much rather be at a 70-80% stocking level and have fish live for years with no deaths and no disease issues. Yours will not be that easy and carefree.

Jim, are you aware that Columbian sharks are saltwater fish that can only live in fresh water as juveniles? They require a brackish/marine environment as they mature, even if they're stunted. They also get huge, and like most cats, are highly predatory. I'm not trying to bust your chops, but you'd be well advised to do a little research and not buy fish on impulse.
