I have a 50 gallon tank. At the bginning i got twenty fish 10 guppies and 10 platies and then irealized that was to many at a time so i returned dead ones and started adding about four every time but they keep dying i was doing water changes every week of 25% but now i do it every other day 10% beccause the fish store saiid so. Nitrite 0 nitrates are about 3 and the pet store said my ammonia was below lethal Ph is 7. I have lots of aeration and my filter is rated for up to 70 gallon and my heater works. I have a moss ball. It has been on month or so and i have stopped adding new fish but they are still continuing to die. All the fish include 10 platies 10 guppies 1 black skirt tetra and a cory i feed them a food with no fillers for the firt five ingredients and occassionaly frozen brine shrimp it is usually the female guppies that die and i have a ratio of 3 males to 7 females.

How old is your tank? STOP buying more fish!
Your tank has to go through the nitrogen cycle and establish beneficial bacteria. This will take 6-8wks. I would suggest you read about the nitrogen cycle so you understand what people are talking about in this thread. STOP listening to the store personnel, sounds like they don't have a clue already. Take the money you would spend on more fish and get a liquid test kit, preferrably an API master kit. Track your own tank parameters and react to them like you should. Get the kit, test for ammonia and nitrites and pos back here. We'll recommend what to do. I would do a couple of 50% water changes (not on same day) to try and knock your levels down. Also, when you add fish....whenever you get back to that point....drip acclimate all your fish and you will increase their survival odds. There is a sticky thread in the general section. |

Yep the tank is cycling. And you need to do at least a 50% water change to get the ammonia down. As that is what is killing your fish.

Glad you got your own kit. You need to do 50% water changes everyday until your ammonia level is 1 or below. Once you get it there, the point to do another water change is when it gets above 1 again. If it just a little above 1 do at least 25%. If the level is at 3 or higher you should do 50%. This plan will work for when you get nitrites showing up also.

Nitrites are toxic to fish, so make sure you do water changes if they get to 1ppm as well. (So far it sounds like your Nitrites are in check.) Nitrates are normal and as long as they are below 40ppm (ideally below 30ppm) then they are fine.
