I came down stairs tonight after sleeping all day (I work nights) and I didn't really notice right away, but my stupid AC 110 had stopped running for the second time. The first time I caught it withing seconds of it happening. My main concern is if the BB is all dead now, and how to tell if it is since I have no idea how long the filter has been sitting with no circulation in it. Also, if all the BB is dead, then what should I look for other than the obvious Ammonia and Nitrite spikes? I am really hoping that I don't end up starting a new cycle. To top it all off...My wife's phone died. Here I thought it was going to be a good night. Oh well.

It would take more than 12 hours for the bacteria to die if the media is still wet. You might loose some but not most. You may have a mini cycle for a couple of days but shouldn't be a problem.
I would look into why the filter is stopping like that. You may have to replace it.

From the sound that I heard the other morning I think something hard keeps getting jammed up in it. It basically grinded to a halt when I heard it the first time. I scrubbed out the tubes and the inside of the impeller housing as well as the impeller tonight. Hopefully what ever was in there is gone now. As far as the BB goes I was not sure of the life cycle of it. Thanks.

Next time check the impeller shaft. Feel if its smooth or rough. If its rough its damaged. Also turn it to see if it might be bent.

If it comes to it, they sell just the impeller.

One of my small filters for my 5 gallon did this, it was sand in the impeller, and also if the intake tube wiggles loose it will stop. I'm not sure HOW but it would occassionally come loose without being touched.

I agree with susankat and jrman83,
But finding repair parts is getting harder to find at least for me in Raleigh NC all the large pet supply stores have quit stocking repair parts. And even the smaller stores are following suit. I had the same thing happen to me and I ended up replacing the entire filter system. |

When I got home this morning the filter was still running strong. I am hoping that It was just a snail like Holly12 had said in my other thread re: this issue, Crisis averted
Anyway, Thanks for all the advice. Hopefully I won't have to deal with this again because I doubt my filter could handle being dropped on the floor again (yeah, I freaking dropped it last night).

Depending on the filter, im not familiar with the AC 110, you can get motors, impellers, and all sorts of parts individually online. At a great savings to a whole new filter.

I recently stopped using pre filters due to the ridiculous amount of crap I had floating around in my tank. I was having to clean it off daily and to top it all off, I would spend roughly 5-10 minutes every time rinsing out the brownish crap that was repeatedly clogging it up to the point that the water would not even flow through it. Since I stopped using the Fluval pre filters I have been on the look out for another type of pre filter that might hold up better for my filter and not jam it up so bad.

how lrage of a tank do you have and what fish do you have in it.
if it is large enough I would use a drip system with a sump and a siphon overflow box |

I have a 75 gallon with a variety of fish (some which probably shouldn't be together). I have Angels, various tetras, platys, Gouramis, ect. I am in the planning stage of building a sump for my tank.
