What do you mean by obsessing? Is he smashing into the glass trying to get at it? That could be a problem.
If it's just sitting there staring at it, don't worry about it, it's fine. Algae eaters tend to sit in place for long periods of time.

Male Bettas can't stand another Betta near them and will actually try and fight their reflection. I suspect you Algae Eater is just lonely. Get another two or three for company.

Not sure about 2 or 3 more being a good idea. Depends on a few things such as your tank size, and bioload you have. Also if you have 3-4 Pleco you will need to feed them. There shouldn't be that much algae present to support them all.
Just my opinion

Do you know what kind of "algae eater" it is? If you don't, try and take a picture of it and post it here so someone can ID it. Btw next time when getting fish, make sure you do research on them before spontaneously buying them, you need to know what you're keeping
![]() Edit: Just read your other post. You have a Golden Chinese Algae Eater. These fish get aggressive when they get older and stop eating algae. These fish also get pretty big. What size tank do you have? If you have anything less than 75 gallons, I suggest you take it back to your LFS. My guess is that it's probably very stressed, or being territorial against it's own reflection.

Chinese Algae Eater - Gyrinocheilos aymonieri
Check, that link out and take note of the common names. You should go back to Petsmart and trade it for a couple more Neon Tetras.

Golden Algae eaters (also known as Chinese Algae eaters) will start attacking fish as they get older. When they latch onto other fish, they are eating the slime coating off of that fish... which can lead to big holes in said fish... and they die.
You could try supplementing it's food with algae wafers and sinking catfish pellets... but the best thing would to be to trade it in for some other fish. (If you are worried about algae, then try cutting back the time you have your lighting on for.) Nerite snails are wicked algae eaters! They won't eat your plants, just algae. You can also throw in some algae wafers for them and some blanched zucchini.

Which is a great reason to trade him in now. Having a fish that is supposed to get big in a small tank, stunts their growth which makes them sick and wrecks their internal organs.
