Default MOVING SOON!! How to transport fish safely??

I live in an apt. now, and I am moving to a new house soon.
I have a 29 gallon tank, with 16 fish, and a 36 gallon with 15 fish. Theyre all small fish.. platys, and tetras...etc.
I was wondering what is the best way to transport them to the new house? SHould we take them in bags, ... take out most of water and leave them in the tank and take them?

I haven't had to move fish recently, but I remember moving when I was a kid and my dad had a tank full of fish. As far as I can remember, he had a bunch of buckets. He would fill them half way (any fuller and they will spill in the car), and put the fish in them. (He transported all or most of the tank water so the fish had as little shock as possible once at the new place). This will only work if it's a short trip since there will be no heat or aeration/filtration. So.... it takes a bunch of buckets, but maybe you can make a few trips if your new place isn't far? Maybe take some water in the first trip, then take the fish, then one more trip for the rest of the water?

Hope this helps.

Yeah that could work. It is a short trip actually. Like 10 minutes up the street. I just didnt want to shock them too much, or run the risk of losing some of them. Thats definitly do-able though.
thanks for the advise!

Your biggest issue is the with tank sizes themselves and the weight of them. If they were small tanks like a 10g, I would say to remove about 3/4 of the water and then just carry away.

A 29 and 36 will be quite heavy. Using buckets to drain a majority of the water will be best. And being that it is just a few minutes away, you can set them back up quickly using the same water if you wanted.

When I moved 1200 miles,I bagged all my fish as if I were shipping them. That meant double bagging them just in case, placing in a styrofoam box and keeping it from getting crushed.I acclimated them to the new tanks the same way as I did whjen I first got them. You can place the substrate in a bucket with a lid and I kept the filter pads in a bag with water from the filter(HOB)and had it tied as well.

Yeah that could definitely work, also. Luckily it is a short drive so im hopeing we get the tanks set up quick enough so the fish arent in the bags, or buckets long. I get so paranoid with my fish lol. We will need a few people to help us transport everything. My apt is on the 3rd floor, so that means down lots of steps and around the building.
