It is getting close to winter break at my school and I was wondering of the best way to move my fish because my school closes and it impossible for me to care for them 1 hour 1/2 - 2 hours away.
I have read some basic things, but I would like to get more in depth about what to do. I was thinking about driving back a week before finals week (or whenever I plan to go home as I am not sure if I have finals because they may just be projects) to bring them home and set up the tank so that my parents can take care of them. My dad and mom kept a 10 and 20 gallon tank at different points when I was younger so they have experience taking care of fish and I am not worried. They also took care of my sisters beta fish while she is at school. Sadly that fish died when we had a huge power outage due to snow in October and the water just got too cold. Anyway I am just looking for some ways to transport the fish without causing to much stress. My other option is to take them home over thanksgiving as well, and trust my parents with water changes, which I am sure they would do. Anyway any advice would be much appreciated. |

Do a decent water change a couple days before the move (to maximize water clarity but also while giving the fish time to calm down since water changes are somewhat stressful) and when you're ready to do it take out about 60-70% and cover the tank up with something before putting it in your care and taking off. Set your car to the appropriate temperature and you should be good to go.

Rhokey's idea will work.
How big is your tank? You can also use a 5 gallon bucket (that you use for water changes), put some of the tank water in that, put the fish in it and make sure it's covered. Then, empty the tank water as much as possible and move the tank. (Keep the gravel and filter media wet or all the bacteria will die.) Make sure to get the filter up and running again as soon as possible since the bacteria also needs oxygen. Since the water at school and the water at home is probably different, you are probably going to want to drip acclimate your fish so you don't shock them with pH and other parameter differences. Make sure the water (at your parent's house) that you will be using has been sitting out for 24-48 hours to air off gasses and be sure to use water conditioner. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Cool thanks for the advice, as far as drip acclamation goes, what does that entail, I have heard of it before but I didn't quite understand it.
I have a small 3 gallon tank. I put the water at school through a Brita filter, and I know we have a ton of distilled water at home that my parents used for my sisters beta. I always use water conditioner every time I do a water change as well. |
