Default Merino Moss Balls- Supposed to be Easy?

So I recently purchased an merino moss ball, and as many folks have told me, just throw it in, and don't worry about it. I have done that and since I have aquired it, it was fine for 72 hrs, then it seemed to get a bit gray- on the tips of the moss/algae, and when i picked it up, it smelled a bit sulfery. Any ideas?

I have a 2.5 gal tank with betta, 3x's weekly water changes with declorinated water, and heater set to 78. Im sumped, so thank you in advance for reading!

Maybe it is just adjusting to your tank?

I actually figured out its from the new sand that I put into the tank- it was rinsed out- but maybe I need to do it again! Thanks all for replying!
