Default Keeping a piranha

Hi guys just a few questions i wanted to fire at you all about piranhas,

1: what size tank is ideal for a piranha?
2: could you use a bunch of fake plants instead of real ones?
3: can you feed them flake when they are babies?
4: how would you clean them out? with getting bite etc?
5: is there ideal habitat a dark location?
6: could you buy just 1 piranha instead of a bunch?
7: how often would you feed them?

I think that is all for now, if i have anymore il post them,

This is going to open another can of worms here. First thing you need to do is check if they are legal in your state.

If you do a search here you will find several answers to your questions.

They are pack hunters so they really should be kept in groups, and red bellies I'm pretty sure get around 8"-10" if not bigger so that also means they would need a fairly large tank, if you want em then by all means go for it but check out a few google searches about them and see if you can really provide for them

If you go down this road and end up getting one......later down the road when the fish gets too big and destroying everything, do the right thing and euthanize it. Feeling sorry for it and letting it go in some river or stream is not an alternative.

If you let it go if you outgrow it, or for any other reason. You will destroy the natural eco system of the water you release it in. That is not only disgusting it is inexcusable. If you can't euthanize it, don't get it in the first place. Talk to someone in a country like Spain where their largest river now only contains 200# and larger catfish, because some moron from Germany thought it would be a good idea to let them loose in the river.

Again euthanasia, not an option. How about, if you can't provide for it through all stages of it's life, don't get it.

For example, I want a great dane, but I can't provide for any dogs larger than a beagle. Should I get the great dane, and when it becomes an inconvience for me, kill it? No, I don't get it in the first place. Anyone who raises an animal, just to kill it when it's inconvienient, should get a taste of their own medicine, IMHO - Nereus

You mean not an option for you? It's always an option. If you don't have the backbone for it, then I would suggest you not get one or anything like it.

Most people who get something like this don't think so far ahead to think the whole, raise an animal just to kill it scenario. They only know they want the fish and don't how to handle it once it gets huge. Same occurs for many species of fish that start in aquariums.

If the choices are, A-keep it, B-get rid of it, whatever it takes to get to B can be a number of possible choices. But, if the plan is to release in a waterway then it should be euthanized before that point.

So if you owned it, had to get rid of it for whatever reason and could't find someone to take it off your hands.....what would you do with it if you couldn't kill it?

I'd give it a go. I've yet to find a fish that didn't taste good, and I've been looking.
