Hi Everyone,
I have just cleaned the internal filter that came with my Juwel Rio 180 after about 1 month of usage prior to it's last good clean. The tank has been going for about 6 months and I change the white filter wool on a daily basis, but this week I took out the media and heater and powerhead and used the suction cleaner in the sections that hold the heater and I was amazed a bucket of pure black crap came out that stunk of sulphur. Must be time for me to get an external filter, my poor fish. Why do these filter have these stagnent areas is beyond me. Cheers Richard Firth Fibreglass Specialists - Home |

Black foul smelling water that stinks means that it's working!
You must be joking that's stagnent water. Cheers Richard PS I fibreglass koi ponds for a living and if anyone had a filter that smelt like that I would be warning them of ill health and parasites problems. |

If it didn't get dirty like that , then the filter isn't doing its job. You just have to clean it out more often. It is pulling fish poo and other crap out of the water.

I'm not familiar with this type of filter, so forgive me if this is a dumb question, but are you really supposed to change something in it *daily*? That seems like a huge pain at best, and at worst, bad for the bacteria in the filter.
