With one of the tanks i bought i got 4 or 5 pieces of really nice driftwood a few of them i noticed when cleaning up i have a nylon brush with pretty stiff bristles. When i scrubbed them looks like the outer part of the wood is coming off in the water almost looks like sand. They were in a tank for many years. I put them in a tank i am setting up i noticed today there is like a clear stringy fuzz on them. I have herd not to use driftwood that is rotten but was just curious why could someone enlighten me? I do not have a problem removing them if they will hurt the fish. I would rather do it now then when fish are in it.

Most my wood can be scraped like you describe, and they did have the fuzz when I placed them in the tank.Took about two weeks for the fuzz to go away.

I had always thought it was just new wood until recently. I put a piece in my 75g that is just now showing stuff and it has been in the tank over 4 months and it's the 2nd time.
