Hello! I have had a planted freshwater aquarium for a year or so now without any problems I have some neons, Zebra danios, a cory cat a plecostamus and a dwarf gourami in my tank. While shopping with a friend we spotted some fruit tetras that had just come into walmart and on Impulse I bought some and brought them home and (stupidly) put them right into the tank with the other fish and now They have Ick all over them and it has contaminated the whole tank. I plan to treat it with salt and heat but
I know that Salt is not good for my Cory cat and I was wondering what your opinion would be on me taking him out of the tank and putting him into my goldfish tank while I treat the other tank, I am afraid that he might already be infected with Ich even though he is not showing signs of it However I am also afraid that if I leave him in the contaminated tank the salt will hurt him. What should I do??? ![]() |

no leave him in. I dose my tank with 6 cory catfish with aquarium salt with every water change, they dont mind the slightly brackish water at all, theyve done great in my tank for over 3 months and I keep about 1 TBSP of salt per 10 gal. keep him in it will stress him out more to move him then to add salt.

Not sure on the salt... he may be able to take a tiny bit of it but not a lot.
Also, if your tank size allows for it, get 4 more corys at least. They are a very social fish and need to be in a school of at least 5.

Hello megan...
Don't put your Cory into the Goldfish tank. The Cory is a tropical fish and lives in warm water. The Goldfish isn't a tropical fish and lives in cooler water. If you've caught the virus in time, the salt and heat should be sufficient to kill the bacteria. You'll need to do 50 percent water changes every other day for 10 days. Make sure you vacuum the gravel well. Most of the bacteria will live in the gravel. Stop feeding the fish, if they have "Ich" they'll stop eating and you don't want uneaten food in the water. You're right, Corys are salt sensative, so I would keep the amount dosed to one teaspoon per five gallons of your water change water. If you keep live plants in this tank, they'll appreciate the lower salt too. The heat should be raised to 86 degrees over 48 hours and turn the lights off in your tank. Believe it or not, the paracites locate a host by sight. I would bring things back to normal in about a week. B
