I have a few questions for the PRO's...
i have a 46 gallon bowfront aquarium with 2 orandas and 2 ryukins i have a large 12 inch airstone, various live plants, driftwood and somerocks. water parameters are: ph 7.8 ammonia:0.25ppm nitrite:0ppm and nitrates:20ppm --------------------------------- what can u tell me from those readings off the bat?? 2 weeks ago i finished ich treatment... and im trying to get back into normal routine.. 20% water change every 3rd day. dose with conditioner and nutrafin cycle is the norm. these guys are dirty as hell.. lol! THANKS! ![]() |

The 0.25ppm ammonia reading seems fine with the goldies, and the fact that it's so low, the nitrites are 0, and you're seeing nitrate indicate that the nitrogen cycle is established, however you'll have to do some SERIOUS upkeep to keep those fish happy in such a small tank for them. Koi are better suited for ponds and giant holding tubs in the garage in the winter, if you ask me.

My mistake, I just Googled them. I think I was thinking of shubunkins or something like that.
They're still pretty bad poo machines though

Good, it means you're doing water changes often enough
![]() And look for white film on the surface of their scales - signs of ammonia or nitrite burns. But with due diligence, I think you'll never have to worry.

White film is never a good thing, if you ask me, but that's just my own thoughts. I've never kept goldies personally, so everything I'm telling you right now is second-hand.

Your readings look fine for the tank and what you have? You may have an issue with overstock, but your readings don't show that. Not sure I'm understanding what you are asking here?

Slight ammonia is sort of a norm for goldie tanks. I think you're pushing overstock....it's not just 4 fish. It's 4 goldies. Like I said, I thought your water paramaters looked pretty good and if you're doing water changes like you say, you'll be fine.

Your only just overstocked. 20gal for the 1st goldie and 10gal for each goldie after - 4 goldies makes you only 4gal short.
How much do you feed? Overfeeding will cause ammonia and nitrate. What filter do you have on here. What is your cleaning schedule?

Do not add cories to the tank, if you have food in the bottom, do not feed them as much. Cories dont do algae anyway.
