Okay, So ive read several places there are Fish aquariums and reptile aquariums.. So what i gather is Reptile Aquariums are not ment to hold water or atleast alot of water... So this aquarium i found is a 30G its 36 inches long but has no middle brace.. From what ive read the middle brace is where the problems are at... Or am i thinking to much into this? its a 30G 36 inches long does it need a middle brace? or should i just take the damn thing and water test it? lol
thanks for the help ![]() |

Middle braces are only needed on tanks 55 gallons or bigger, unless it's an extra long (we call them breeder tanks). I think yours is a standard 30 gallon (Fish Aquarium and Tank* Sizes and Characteristics, starting an aquarium, buying equipment, choosing tanks). My gf has two and they don't have middle braces, so I think you're safe.
As far as reptile vs. aquarium, all you would need to do would be to leak test the tank. Put it somewhere where if it leaks it won't ruin anything it sits on, fill it, and watch for leaks. OR you could be super safe and just re-seal the tank. To do that, use a razor blade to cut away the old silicone, then buy some aquarium-safe (it will say it on the tube) silicone sealant from a hardware store like Lowe's or Home Depot. If you need to, buy the big tube and a caulking gun. Re-sealing a tank is easy and fun and a great way to protect your investment.

Hey thanks a bunch! that makes me feel better. I know it wasnt used for fish as it had the reptile light with it... and apparently it had burnt the top of the tank once... Melted a small peice of the black ring around the top... lol cant see it with the top n what not on it tho. well I believe that 30 is going to be a saltwater tank. will be a while before i do it tho.

Take your time, do your research, cruise the classifieds for deals on hardware and even plants and livestock, and you'll be able to create a great thing.
I've got a 55 gallon I found for free online, bought enough sand to cover the bottom for $10, got a screen top from my best friend, scavenged some rocks, and am cruising the classifieds for a stand, and heat and UV lamps as we speak. There's a selling and trading section at the bottom of the freshwater forum, and I think there's one in the salt water forum as well.

Jeebus, that's a lot of tanks! Do you have hardware for all of them?
