what I did was use coolers and empty the tank saving as much water as possible. Kept the fish and some plants in the coolers then emptying the tank of the decorations (very little) and substrait. I keep the cooler with the lids open a little bit to let light and air in. During winter I would carry the coolers into the motels I stayed at also. Then at the end point I would resetup the tanks using new substrait and not feed the fish during the move and for a week after. (edit) oh yea I also filled the newly setup tanks then added a little water each day until the tank were full. to prevent shocks. (end edit) If you're just moving across town or just a few hundred miles it would be much easier. It is a pain but can be done. I did lose a bunch of fish once when the heater in my car failed in sub zero weather. but never when the heater worked. best of luck, it can be a pain but is doable. my .02 |

It's not that hard.
Don't feed the fish for 36 hours, to clear their bowels. You don't want them messing up the water. Catch them and put them in containers with more air than water. Do the same for plants. Drain the tank completely. Remove all decorations. Cart it to the new house, level it and such. Refill it with water of the temperature you want. Dechlorinate/dechloraminate. Once the bacteria killing chlorine compounds are neutralized, add the decorations etc and start the filter/heater. Add the fish. Start moving boxes and fridges again... |

What I suggest is to do 50 percent water changes for three days and don't feed during those 3 days. When you are ready to move siphon some tank water into an ice chest with a good lid about 50 percent full then place fish in ice chest.

How far a move and what size tank are we talking about anyway. Those things can matter and quite possibly be a simple process.

Lol. Empty 50 - 60% water. Get 2 guys with strong backs, pick tank up, carry to new place. Fill back up with fresh water. BAM!! Tank is moved AND ya did your weekly WC.

Carrying the tank with water is a recipe for a split seam. Split pants, too.

Moving a 40 gallon tank to a new house isn't as bad as you'd think though. I've done it a couple of times. I put the fish in a cooler box, it worked great. |

If its just down the street then just net them and place in a cooler or another container.Empty most of the water, keep the filter media and gravel/sand/substrate wet and make sure to slowly acclimate the fish to the new tank water via drip acclimation once you get to the new place.
