I have a 29g tank with-
1 paradise fish 5 zebra danios 3 columbian tetras How many more fish could I safely add to this? Any suggestions for compatible fish? I'd really like to add something brightly coloured. I do plan on getting a few more of the tetras but these were the last of their type at the store. Are there other types of tetras that will school with them? |

Going by the 1"/Gallon rule of thumb: I'd say you've got about 17 inches of fish in there now, so you've got 12" to go. A group of lemon tetras might be a good addition to your aquarium. Lemons are fun little fishes that are pretty hardy and easy to keep. What are your water parameters? That's an important part of making the decision.

Thanks for the reply. Ammonia and nitrites are 0, nitrate about 10 and ph 7.8. The lemon tetras look nice, but I havnt seen them for sale around here. I think my ph is a little high but I'm afraid to try and change it with any products incase I mess up

Agree, you shouldn't mess with the water parameters. I had a bunch of lemon tetras in pretty hard water and a pH of 8.2 when I was in Texas and they did well. What's your water hardness? If the columbian tetras are doing well, you should be ok I suppose. Don't know about availability online, but it's much better to see them in action before you decide.

I personally like cardinal tetras as they look similar to neons, but are hardier. Lemon tetras are also a nice option. Cory cats are a nice option as well, depending on your substrate. Endler's Livebearers are pretty awesome too.

Not sure what the exact hardness is but I know it's moderate-high. I have a couple small pieces of driftwood in the tank.

Ohh, I'd love to get some cories but I have gravel, the regular rough coloured stuff. I used to have bronze and peppered ones a few years ago, but I moved several hrs away and rehomed all my fish :( I've just started getting back into it. I have a 10 g that I'm planning on setting up in the near future with sand and some live plants as a cory tank, and maybe a few guppies.

I have a 30 gallon tank stocked mostly with Tetras. I have Black Phantom Tetras, Black Skirt Tetras, Bloodfin Tetras, and Diamond Tetras. Because I have very good filtration and aeration, I have pushed the limit a bit on the one inch rule. I also have a 27 gallon tank stocked with Neon Tetras and Glolight Tetras. In a 10 gallon tank I have Von Rios Tetras and X-ray Tetras.

the one inch per gallon rule is a bit flawed. I would add to the schools you have already, the danios and columbian tetras. a dwarf gourami would make a nice centerpiece fish

Two of my favorite fish are Cardinal Tetras and Corys. I would add 5 Corys and 5 Cardinals. Watch your Paradise Fish, some can get nippy. All of your fish do fine below 75F.

Thanks everyone. The paradise fish was a little nippy with the tetras when I first added them, but after about half an hour he stopped and has been fine since. I think I'll just add to the schools I have for now, and maybe add another type of tetra. Any suggestion for a bottom feeder that doesnt get too big or messy, that is ok with gravel?

Have several cory cats with loaches and one HAPPY betta in 80 degree 55G with regular gravel. They are all happy and thriving. I also moved to all silk plants - sorry guys..got tired of the pains it took for me to keep up the planted world. Fish are happy as am I and it looks awesome. Need to take sme pics as all my pics on here are of planted version.
![]() Also since I moved from planted I can now use my favorite combination even tho its freshwater. ATI Aquablue Special for the whitest white and ATI Blue Plus. Same combo I use in smaller non planted mystery snail tank for my son. We love the look!
