We have an oscar tank that uses two power filters. One is a Aqua Clear unit that I have setup for strictly bio filtration and ammonia removal. The other one is a aqueon 55 power filter that was mainly a carbon filter. I got tired of buying replacement filters so I came up with an idea. Thers is a plastic screen thing that holds the filter cartridges. I took those and covered them with two layers of nylon stocking and filled the inside with activated carbon. I rinse it very well befor I put it in the filter unit. My tank has never been more crystal clear. I tested the water to make sure there are no bad side affects and all seems well. Does anyone see a problem with this or has anyone tried something like this?

Should be fine, I have used that method before when clearing up a tank. I don't run carbon very much except for removing meds and such then when cleared up I remove the carbon as its not needed all the time.
