Yes so high, my name is Nick, I don't have a whole lot of experience with fish other than goldfish and a bit of research.
Few questions or more likely points in the right direction is what im after. I have a fairly deep/ large tank that I want to be made into a freshwater tropical tank. I think iv got all the 'infrastructure' related to it sorted, but for the most part, im still pretty vague on what fish to have in it and plants for that matter...and substrate..jesus. Ok so the tank is 1.2m high, 0.3m deep and 0.5m wide, (from memory, not with me at the moment) which equates to about 80Gal/300L. So with this in mind im thinking AngleFish would be perfect right? tall tank + lots of room? Anyone got any suggestions of what other fishys i should look into getting.. not to keen on Cichlids as im a beginner. Tetras i guess will be eaten up by the Angles... I know of gourami's to, they look nice. Not sure of there requirements though? Finally, I know it vary's per fish but assuming there's no Tetras in the tank what kind of numbers would this tank support, stocking wise.. Plant wise, I was aiming for a good amount of plants but not overpowering... and I guess im looking at some tall ones to0 to work with the tank dimensions. Here i have 0% knowledge so any help would be great. Any help would be great. I know these threads are a pain in the ass... so im sorry for being lazy, a bit overwhelmed by all the info though.. Cheers Nick |

I don't have a lot of knowledge concerning large tanks but I'll chime in.
Amazon Sword plants are popular. Fairly easy to care for (though one of mine died somehow) and grow many large leaves that get big. Also don't require too much light. As for what kind/how many fish. There is a great tool that will calculate your stocking/filtration level and also alert you of some potential dangers of having/mixing certain fish. It isn't perfect and shouldn't be used as your sole source of advise but it's a great tool nonetheless. Cycle your tank first either fishless or with a hardy fish to begin with. There are articles on here on how to do either one. Once the tank is cycled slowly add your fish. Start with either the tetras or angels doing it slowly. Acclimate them well before releasing them to the tank.
If you want to keep the plants simple amazon swords and vals would do great in a tank that size. Angels would do good in a tall tank like that and if it is 80 gals I would start out with a few small ones and let them pair up. Once they are paired sell or give away all but 2 pairs. There are several tetras that can go with angels and you should be able to have a good size school. I would stick with just one kind though as it looks so much better. Add a few cories (7 - 10) of the same type and a couple of the smaller plecos like bristlenose and the tank should be good to go.

Thanks for that advice. I forgot to mention im familiar with cycling, well il still have a read of course.
What is the point of getting more than two pair of angles then reducing to 2 pairs later on? 2 pairs = the most this tank can support, but then why more to begin with? Also would you mind listing some of the Tetras that are compatible, i assume the larger variety's; and I was thinking about 15-20 would be ok size for a school?? Maybe to much.. |

It is said that Cardinals/Neons will be eaten by Angels once the Angel matures, but I have some huge ones that I know they couldn't eat if they wanted to. Time will tell if my Angels start attacking them as they get older. Aside from that, I have seen many, many tanks with Angels and Cards/Neos in it. Blood fin and Rummy-nose tetras are a good choice and both school very tight. With those two it's not so much school, as it is follow the leader, lol.

I've seen tanks like this with one or two tall specimen pieces of driftwood, an interesting rock (specifically selected for one fairly smooth, vertical flat surface), moderately planted with tall vallisneria to great effect. I had one many years ago with a large mated pair of "green apple" discus, a large school of bleeding heart tetras, and some corys. I traded hundreds of discus over the life of the tank for all my other pet supplies. Good Luck.
I've moved on to mixed marine reef tanks now, but I miss those discus...perhaps its time for another tank. Klinemw |
