I've finally got the 55 gal that my friend left me. It's been sitting in her storage for years, so it's really dirty and needs just about all the equipment. I'm planning to populate it with live plants once I get a substrate in it, but it doesn't even have a lid at the moment. It does have a couple of lights, but without a lid, they're pretty useless. any suggestions on reliable sites to buy equipment? The lps around here are kinda spendy for me.
I'm going to start by getting it clean. I'm posting a couple of pics in my gallery of it. Right now it's outside on the deck. The ledge around the top that is supposed to hold up the lid appears to be bent and possibly coming off is this going to be a hazard? Can it be fixed/replaced? Took a handy piece of advice from the thread about buying a used tank. Filling it up now to check for leaks. If it does leak, I have a friend who's BF keeps snakes, I'm sure he could use it.

Craigslist usually offers a lot of good deals. Or you could try eBay. There is also a forum on this site where people offer things for sale or trade. Good luck with the search!

still waiting to see if it leaks. Not sure about the other structural issue, tho.

Can you get a picture of it?Its hard to say about the top trim without seeing it.I would imagine as long as its a solid piece and its still on the tank,it should do its job. However if its in too bad a shape, you can always buy a replacement piece.

If you take the exact measurements a lot of lfs can order a new trim for it. All you would have to do is remove the old and silicone the new one on.
