Ok so i went to the LFS today for a background for my 20 gal and parused the fish they got in.. and i saw the Giant Danio. Fell in love with the blue tint and yellow stripes and he looked kinda somewhat maybe like an arawona with the upswept mouth. So i bought him, brought him home and acclimated him to the tank.
My question is did i make a rash decision. I have 2 black fin tetras, 2 guppies, male and female swords, 1 glolight tetra and a amano shrimp. The only sign of aggression i saw was him chasing a black fin for a second then go back to cruising the water surface, this happened twice. No other fish chasing or aggression and from what i read they at best are fin nippers and not deadly. I like also in the feeding how it just goes after the food (today was baby shrimp) like a shark so to speak. They had another Giant there as well. SO my question is should i keep him? Should i get the other Giant to give him company? 2 Giants arent enough bring him back or 1 is ok not 2? I do like him but want to make sure he is happy and all other tank mates are cool as well. |

Giant Danios are like all other Danios in that they are schooling fish and need 6+. And, just like all other Danios, if they aren't kept in large enough numbers, can get bored and start chasing the other fish - not to hurt them, but because they are bored, but it tends to stress the fish they chase.
Your Black Fin Tetras and Glolight Tetras are also a schooling fish, and each need a group of 6+ as well. This could cause a problem, because 6 Tetras, 6 Giant Danios, 6 Glolights, 2 Guppies plus the swords (is it 2? A male and female?) is waaaay overstocking your 20g. I'm not worried about the Amano, as shrimp have a tiny bioload. Essentially, you are going to need to re-home quite a few fish if you want to keep the Tetras in the proper schooling numbers. (Guppies, Swords and either the Danios or one of your Tetra schools would have to go.) You could keep 6 Giant Danios and either 2 Guppies or 2 Swords - since you really like the Danios - but then I'd re-home or trade in the Guppies or Swords, the 1 Glowlight and the 2 Black Fin Tetras. What kind of filtration do you have? If you have filtration for a tank larger than 20g, then you may be able to squeeze a few more fish in there.
