Hello again,
I ended up purchasing that used Penn Plax 1200 canister filter, and it has no media in it and am in the process of sourcing media. Not 100% sure what media I want in here, but mimicking my HOB filter, I'd assume I want course sponge (physical), and bio media. Ceramic rings are easy enough, but I've always purchased sponges specific to the filter. IN this case, I'm finding them for $5-$7 bucks online + shipping = Can I use any generic sponges that are much cheaper that I can cut to fit into the filter? My initial searching the internet hasn't produced anything useful yet. Thanks!

Aquaclear has some decent sponges you can cut to size, it might take a couple of pieces to fill in, but it works pretty good.
