Default FW Tank Upgrade... Suggestions?

Hello, all!

I've recently been looking into getting a bigger tank. I currently have a 2.5-gallon Aqueon with a piece of sandstone and some eclectic color combinations for my plastic plants and the gravel (it seemed cool at the time haha). The residents are a gold longfin danio and a zebra danio (I had others but they didn't make the trip home). I would really like to get a tank of live plants (I was thinking anubis nana or java fern or both) and a driftwood accent to either replance or accompany my sandstone rock. I'd like to have a school of danios or a school of neon tetras. My conumdrum is that I'm limited by my tank size... I have to be able to keep it on a dresser in my campus apartment (capable of a ten-gallon) AND have it be transportable in the front seat of a vehicle. Another thing I have to consider is the filter. The one that came with my tank setup doesn't create enough surface agitaiton (there's a film on the water surface and my fish sip air occasionally), so I want something affordable but efficient. Does anyone have any suggestions? (Recap: appropriate tank size, suitable plants, number of fish in an average school)

Tank Size: 10g - But you had already mentioned that. ;o)

Plants: Pretty much anything will grow in it. You would just want be cautious with ones that can grow really large like giant Hygro and Water sprites. But if you are diligent with your trimming, even those are possible. I keep some C. balansae in 10s.

Fishy School: 5-6 will be a nice school for a planted 10g.

For the filter - just do lots of plants and a nice light! If you really feel the need for a mechanical filter though, go with a sponge filter. Yeah, it will take up some room in the tank, but it's some of the best biological mechanical filtration out there for super cheap.

Thank you for the help!! I never even thought of not needing a mechanical filter once I get actual plants in there haha
