We have Balas that are going into my 120gl tank. We want to get gouramis as well for the tank. Do any particular types of gouramis do best with Balas? Worse? Or if none, what other kinds of fish are good with Balas.? I know they are peaceful fish, do I dont want anything hyper to startle them.

I don't have experience with either, but from what I've heard bala sharks can make fast jerky movements which might stress out the gouramis, I also think aquariums look good when the fish population have similar swimming characteristics. I have a couple SAE's and they look like retarded spazz's darting around compared to my angelfish. That's mostly personal opinion though. Sounds like its gonna be a cool tank

Tiger barbs and green barbs would be fine with them.
Depends on the look you want. Do you want schooling fish? (Like the balas?) Barbs would work in that case. Or, do you want fish that prefer to be single, with the Balas being the only schoolers?

How many Bala's do you plan on?
I have 4 (recommend at least 3) in a 125gl, with 2 gourami (1 blur,1 3spot), as well as 2 angels, 5 panda barb, 5 green tiger barb, 2 puntis barb(aka roseline) and a big ol albino Pleco. Everyone does just fine together. (It's the tank it submitted last month, if you wanna see it... the turtle has a new tank)
