Default Fun in the tanks

So I put 10 shrimp and 15 neons in a 75g. Well, somehow the shrimp killed and ate most of the neons. Then I brought home a 10" bala and irridescent and put them in for an evening while i prepped my 125g for them. In 4 hours they cleared the tank of any shrimp. But now everything is pretty balanced and everyone is happy.

Wait, what?! What kind of shrimp did you get??!! Shrimp are docile animals that don't kill fish.... they WILL eat dead fish, but I've NEVER heard of any hunting and killing fish. (They don't have teeth or claws or anything.... all they would be able to do is flail their legs at the fish...)

How did you acclimate the fish? Maybe they died and the shrimp ate them? (If something is off with the water it can kill a whole school.) Then, the shrimp would go to town eating them!

I can see the Bala sharks eating the shrimp, however.

Sorry for all the losses! (Never a good day when everyone in the tank gets eaten!) Are you going to try again?

Ghost shrimp, It was the damndest thing, too. The water parameters in the tank were all well within normal range, sure it was in cycle but I was treating with seachem stabilize, and none of the other fish had any issues. The shrimp were active, they swam up to the top and back down regularly. It was a bummer, I really liked the colors of the neons, but I guess they werne't meant to be.

When I moved hte big sharks to my 125g I moved my little fish from there over to my 75g where the neons were. They are swimming happily in a tank where hte neons just died. The neons were about 1/2 the size of the shrimp, maybe when they slept? I honestly have no idea.

I was going to put discus in my 75g, but when I saw the sale at the lfs, the 2 sharks seemed very lonely, and picked up both for $6 each. They were alone in their tanks, and had been for the past couple months. When the stock was 80% off and I went in for hte discus, the discus selection was stripped pretty thin, so I wandered around and saw the big sharks that I looked at every time I was there, and ended up buying them. I updated my tank configurations in my signature for who's rooming with who.

If the tank was still in cycle, that's probably what killed the Neons, (even if you are using a chemical to help.) They are really sensitive fish and need 0 ammonia, 0 Nitrite and 20ppm or lower Nitrates. I'm guessing that's what did it. (I had 8 neons/cards right after cycling, and when my tank went thorough a 'mini cycle' from adding a bunch of new fish, the water parameter change killed them all off. I had multiple dying daily. It sucked!

Ghost shrimp are pretty big, but a 10" Bala would make short work of them!! I'm guessing he won't need to eat for a while?

He still eats like a fiend. The irridescent is quite shy and standoffish though, not eating much, but it may be due to the new environment.

Sorry, but ghost shrimp did not kill your Neons. If the tank was cycling like you said, it was more than likely that. Neons are not the kind of fish to have in a cycling tank. Well "within normal ranges" explanation doesn't apply to a cycling tank. The shrimp will eat the fish once they are dead, I assume.

I only hope that tank has completed the cycle or you may loose more. You have some big waste producers in both of your tanks.

Agreed on the ghosties...they didn't take out the neons. They may have cleaned up the mess afterwards...but definately not the cause.
