Default Fishless cycling question

It took 100 eyedropper drops of ammonia to get my tank from 0ppm to 4ppm. Once I had 4 ppm, every day, I'd test the water and it would be just under 4 ppm. I would add 6 eyedrops and it would be back at 4ppm. The next day, just under 4ppm and again, 6 more eyedropper drops and it was back...Now my ammonia is 0ppm, nitrites AND nitrates are off the chart. So i should start putting only 3 eyedropper drops in every other day? Seems like a tiny amount. I did it and the ammonia didn't even register. I have a 46 gallon tank.

You should keep dosing ammonia until you introduce fish, gradually, and in small numbers. But wait... until BOTH ammonia AND nitrite register at zero, your cycle is not done. Keep feeding that bacteria a steady diet of ammonia or they will die off and you'll have to cycle again (which is not good). Then wait until your nitrites register zero. Do regular water changes to keep nitrates at 20ppm or less, even during the cycle.

I mostly agree with you ph. The part I disagree on is that nitrates should stay at 20ppm or less. The whole point of doing a fishless cycle is to allow huge spikes of ammonia and nitrites to get through your cycle faster. The reason you do a water change when cycling with fish is so that the water parameters for the fish are safe (so they don't die). In a fishless cycle you don't have any fish to worry about so your water parameters can be crazy.

This being said, it doesn't really matter what the nitrates are, but when the cycle is over you want to do a water change to get them below 20ppm.

You shouldn't do any water changes when fishless cycling.

but that doesn't answer my question...It was taking 6 drops per day to keep it at 4ppm when the nitrites max out, I'm supposed to cut the ammonia in half and every other day. Should I be putting in 3 drops or 50 drops every other day OR does half a dose mean keeping it steady at 2ppm?
