I've been a member of the forum for a while, have gotten a little feedback from the group, and read a lot of your posts. Now I finally have a tank! I've been wanting one ever since I gave mine to my neighbor (rather than try to move it halfway across the country) when we left Cali years ago. The way I got this one is kinda sad (a family friend passed away earlier this year), but I'm still excited to have it!
Anyway, it's a 30g(?) hex tank, already established with a large colony of guppies; all ages, colors, and sizes. There's also a 3" bottom feeder in there, tho I'm not sure what he is. I took a short video of him that I will post. We moved the tank from my mother-in-law's house Saturday night using gallon-size water jugs to transport fish & water. We didn't get home til after 1am, so I opened all the lids on the jugs and left them in the car overnight. I only lost one fish, and that may have been the one that fell on the floor when we were removing them from the tank. It hadn't been properly cared for, so the algae was out of control. I have pics of that, too. I got everybody back in yesterday afternoon after I cleaned the glass and siphoned out as much crud as I could. This morning I put the plants back in. They're all artificial for now, but I plan to replace them all with live plants over time. My friend was never able to keep plants alive before because it never got any natural light, but now I have it in front of a window. I know it's not ideal, but that's the only place I had room for it. I have louvered shutters on the windows and I have them closed down as tight as possible so as to try to minimize algae growth. I bought two mystery snails yesterday and they seem quite happy in there. I'd also like to add some small algae eaters if there's room. Hopefully some of you can take a look at my pics and tell me if I have too many fish already. There are certainly a lot of them, and a few look as though they may be getting ready to add to the population. Guppies - YouTube Bottom Feeder - YouTube

I couldn't upload the videos to my gallery, so I added links to them on YouTube.

Why is the tank in front of the window? Does it not have a light of its own?
I'm at work so I can't see the pics or vids, but I'm pretty sure the bottom feeder is either a plecostimus (pleco - suckerfish), or a catfish (has whiskers on the sides). Either way, congrats on the new tank! You should add your tank specs in your signature on here ![]()

it's in front of the window because there's no place else to put it. I want it here in the family room where I can see it, but we have a sofa, t.v., and 3 computers in here as well, so the only place left to put it was in front of the window next to the t.v.

Congrats' on the tank! It's looking great and the fish all look happy.
I don't think I'd add any more for now though, hahaha. Seems like a lot of guppies.... although, if it IS a 30g tank (you weren't sure?) you may be able to put some Oto cats in there... how many fish are in there at the moment? I couldn't tell what the bottom feeder is.... can you take a longer video and get closer to him? Mystery snails are super cute... but they are probably going to eat any live plants you put in the tank in the future....

Otos were what I was thinking of adding. There are too many guppies to count, some are less than 1/4" long. I'll try to take a better pic of the big fish. he doesn't usually come out from under the bubble stone.

If there are too many fish to count, then maybe don't add any fish for a while. Don't want to overstock.....

Couldn't quite tell but the bottom feeder looked like a cory. My corys will make a mad dash for the surface once in a while, a dead give away.

Is that bottom feeder a really young yoyo loach? Kinda' looked a bit like it... here' a pic of one: Google Images
I noticed that yours was long and thin, but kinda' tall and was silvery with some dark markings on the side.... fits the profile of a Yoyo loach.... Does it have 'barbels?' (The whisker type things near its mouth?)

If you have room you can try dividing your vast guppy colony by getting another tank, and get two more Yoyo Loaches so he won't feel stressed by himself.

For sure it would need 2 more buddies. I was fairly sure it was a Yoyo... had the same long and slim, but taller body, and was silvery with the dark markings on the side..... I googled the yoyo loach pic and even my husband (who is NOT a fish expert by any means, hahahah) agreed that it looked like a Yoyo Loach.... would be nice if someone could confirm so Jpdy could know for sure, and get it 2 more friends IF they will not over stock the tank.
