Okay so I know many people don't know that thier driftwood is actually bog wood becuse driftwood comes from the beach and sinces its from the oeacn it has salt it can't be used in the fresh water aquriums. On the other hand ther are really some stunning pieces for aquriums so i would like to purpose on this thread a Driftwood Foto contest. There are a cuple of rules.
1. You must have a foto of your piece.
2. It must be yours
Thats about it so please participate and if possible inculde the location were you got it from if from mine I collect localy and its dense so it dosn't need to be water loged, and since its not from the water it wont have parasites all I have to do is soak it to remove tennais other that that some brushing.

I collected my piece from a local beach. It looks like it was the stump from a bush and someone cut it out. Thats a piece of slate holding it down because its not quite water logged yet.

Dose or did that peice have salt on it ? Dose it leach tannins??? (turns the water brown, but is none toxic) ?

Nope. It was in freshwater. And nope it doesn't leach tannins as far as i can notice.

I'm trying to figure out how to post multiple pictures, I hope this works.(it looks like they are out of order. You can see more in my gallery. These three monsters were putting off a ton of tannins but I added some Purigen last week and it cleared up in about 7 days. I had to boil the pieces outside in 55 gallon drum over a turkey cooker.

Oh man, I didn't even think of collecting driftwood myself! I happen to know of a GREAT place to collect freshwater driftwood.

Not that I think that people will flock to this site, but it's where the driftwood collects on a dam across a river that drains into the San Luis Valley in Colorado. It's a fairly remote location (far beyond the reach of cell reception and AAA, so you better know how to change a tire ;) )

Basically, if you can find a fast-flowing stream or river that has something across it to slow flow down, tons and tons and tons of driftwood collect just after peak flows in the spring.

Here are pics of my most recently purchased piece of mopani wood. I like it better than other driftwood I have purchased because it is: 1) darker, 2) heavier (i.e. does not float) and 3) comes in naturally cool, twisted designs.

This piece has been in my 30 gallon breeder tank since March and is no longer leaching any tannins. My BN pleco hangs out just underneath the top lip showed in the front view, and my cory cats hang out underneath it as it makes a natural cave.

I bought those three pieces of mine. I had a large piece I collected that I was going to use. The problem with that was A. I didn't know what type of wood it was since the bark was gone. Not all wood is safe for tanks. B. After I got it boiled and scrubbed I found a soft spot and ended up digging a bunch of wood out that was already breaking down so I knew it would be a disaster in the tank. I ended up buying some.
