Default cycling and ammonia question

i have had my new 29 gal up and running for 1 week. I have 4 Serpae Tetras and 2 Corys. I did a ammmonia test today it's only .25 maybe even closer to 0. Shouldn't it be a lot higher by now?

It's only been a week - .25 is fairly significant. I really would have advised doing a fishless cycle, not only to not needlessly subject fish to inevitably fatal conditions but it's easier to control. Anyways with fish in there you'll want to start doing water changes as soon as the ammonia gets to the .50-.75 range if you don't want those fish to die, and even at .25 the fish aren't exactly happy.

for a 29gal and only that many fish it is significant in one week. yes please do water changes to make those fishes happier, after all why would you keep fishes if you're going to kill them? next time, try to do a fishless cycle. I cycled my tank in about 2 weeks without fish by just simply putting a bit of fish food in the daily until bacteria built up. i didn't even use media from another aquarium. you'll prevent an outbreak of ich this way too. and i didn't need to do water changes. gd luck.

It will rise. You actually started with a little too many fish. I suspect that once it starts to rise and will rise fast and you'll be very busy with water changes.

Plan on changing some water ASAP. I just thought it would be a lot higher now.
