as far as I know they don't require anything more than any normal fish, my gouramis in the past have been very hardy fish, just make sure not to put them in a crowded tank or they will get aggressive

Congrats' on your new babies! (I'm impressed - not many 11 year olds would be as dedicated to their fish as you are!) :D

Gouramis do need a filter on their tank but they don't like a super strong current - they need to be able to get to the surface to breathe, as they are labyrinth fish. (This also means they will not do well with Bettas.)

They also love live plants to hide in. Try planting some tall ones in the back and along the sides. Let the plants grow to the surface, and even drape across the top a bit. You may find that the male uses those plants to build his bubble nest in.

Quality flake foods are great as a staple, but frozen blood worms and brine shrimp as a treat will help to keep their colours bright.

Good luck!

This site: How to Care for Chocolate gouramis, Sphaerichthys osphromenoides, with pictures says that they were difficult fish for them. Good luck with them though, sounds like you're on the right track. As Holly said, live plants will make them feel much safer and more secure, and will help your tank out. But good luck, they look like pretty fish!

Maybe he's still getting used to the tank? Sometimes it takes fish a few days to come around. Try the frozen blood worms - he'll probably go for those. Once he's had some food, then switch back to the flakes.

They are not easy fish to keep. They need clean, acid, warm water. Research what Discus need and you will know what water the Chocolates like. Frequent water changes are a requirement. Unlike other Gouramis they are mouth breeders. They also need a dark aquarium with lots of plants to be confortable.
