Ok, so my new freshwater 29 gallon tank has been running for almost a week now. I have had the filter and heater all set up. And I have also done all of the tests on my water, they all come out great.
These are my current readings: Nitrate- 0 Nitrite- 0 Hardness- 25 Chlorine- 0 Freshwater- 7.2 Alkalinity- 80 Ammonia- 0.1 Ph test- 7.1 Temp- 79 F So my question is, do you think I can add my first fish today? ![]()

have you been adding ammonia to do a fishless cycle? or another ammonia source? if not that week of being set up hasnt done much to let your tank cycle and those readings are because theres nothing in it yet. You should decide what type of cycle you would like to do, and then research how it works so you have a good understanding of it.

Um ok I found a type of cycle when you add a fish. I have a betta in a seperate tank right now, do you think he would die if I were to add him to get the cycle started? Would that work? Or would it kill my fish?

You can start cycling a tank with a few different options. First, you can add ammonia manually, as Summer said. Secondly (and this isn't PETA approved) you can add some feeder goldfish (maybe seven or so) in there. They produce a TON of ammonia and that should get it started pretty quickly. However, you should expect some casualties in the process.
When I got my 30 gal, I did the second option. Surprisingly, all my feeder goldfish survived. I took them back to the pet store after it cycled and bought some tropical fish instead.

Considering that betas are left to stew in their own "juices" in those little tiny containers at the pet stores and in folk's homes I would think that a single beta in a 29 would be ok. Usual caveats for water testing a changes apply.

When I cycled my 29 gallon it took roughly 6 weeks to cycle it with fish. If i could go back and do it again I would have done a fishless cycle. When I cycled my 75 gallon I did a fishless cycle and was extremely attentive about it and was able to complete the cycling in 14-15 days. Usually cycleing takes about 4 weeks give or take a few. I do not recommend cycling with fish because it takes a lot longer not to mention it is very hard on fish. also, a fishless cycle is easier to do because you can control the bio load which means the bigger the bio load you put on it the better the fish will do when you add them. if you are just wanting to have some life in your tank while you wait for the cycle to complete I would suggest getting some live plants. It may be boring, but at least there will be something to look at other than substrate.

you should cycle the tank with some hardy fish that will withstand the process.. if you were to do a tropical tank id use a few zebra danios or cherry barbs. i guess you could use the betta if you wanted but i personaly wouldnt put such a beautiful fish like that through the cycling process..
