Default bottom substrate

I just bought 100lbs of Black Diamond blasting media for my bottom substrate to put into my new 40 gal tank that I'm going to be putting together this weekend. I haven't opened the bags, wondering if anyone can tell me if I'm going to like this stuff or not before I begin transferring tanks in to the new one.

Sandblasting sand is the best stuff because it's all very uniform and requires little washing. HOWEVER, it still needs washing! If you add it directly into your tank your water will be pretty cloudy. Just a warning.

Otherwise, you have the best sand I can think of. Kudos.

if you wanted a black sand substrate, you'll like the stuff you've got.

To see if you like it. I've put substrate into a glass jar, filled it with water, rinsed, allowed to settle, then look at it under water to see if i like it.

I've used the same sand several times in different tanks. But must disagree about washing it. It takes a lot of washing. just wash a little at a time. I don't think you will need 2 bags of it though. I used 3 bags in my 220

Don't use more than 3 inches in your tank, over that it will be to deep. Blasting sand also has high amount of iron in it and does great for plants needing a lot of iron rich substrate.
