Default A bit of an emergency regarding guppy fry and a cycling breeding tank.

5 gallon breeding tank has been set-up for the past 3 days, placed the filter into my main 10 gallon tank to speed up the process of the nitrogen cycle. However, my guppy just gave birth and I have 7 healthy fry... Would I kill them all if I were to place my new filter back into the 5 gallon tank and store the fry in there? If this is the case, I'll just keep them in a bowl for a moment with a heater; or am I just better off storing them into the tank? I'm a bit stomped.

So let me get this straight - you took your used filter from your ten, seeded your 5 gallon with it to start the cycle, then moved the filter back to the ten gallon and your momma guppy had fry in the 5? You're fine moving the filter around if you ask me, just be sure the fry tank gets extra attention (i.e. a foam prefilter so they don't get sucked up, more frequent water changes, and special food like larval fruit flies, etc. Also, don't put the momma in with the fry - she'll scarf them. But I'm sure you knew that one.

Afraid not. There are two filters: one for the ten gallons, and the other for the five gallon. I placed the filter from the five gallon alongside the filter in the ten gallon - I did this in order to try and build up the beneficial bacteria in the filter for the five gallon, and now I'll remove the 5 gallon filter from the 10 gallon tank and restore it back into its rightful place. Hopefully I've somewhat dispelled the confusion.

Should be fine then. Just keep on the PWC's and cover the filter inlet with foam (yellow dish sponges work great) so you don't suck up any fry. And look into larval fruit flies. Kens Fish - Home of quality tropical fish food and supplies has good food choices, such as baby brine shrimp, cyclops, golden pearls 5-50 microns, daphnia, and spirulina brine powder.
