Default Betta food

We've talked about how Betta's live longer and better with better food. I feed mine the little pellets daily along with bloodworms about 3 time per week.

I have a problem with the pellets as they float for a few seconds then drop to the bottom. Sometimes he catches them, sometimes not. I have to feed him just one or two at a time to keep the food from collecting on the bottom of the tank and he won't eat it there and I don't blame him.

I am thinking there must be better food for him and some that doesn't required me to stand there dropping one tiny pellet at a time. It takes 5 minutes to feed the guy. Not all that long, I'll grant you, but I have 7 tanks and lots of things to do in the morning.

The best food to feed you Betta would be Mosquito Wrigglers, hard to find and probably illegal in many states. I would try wingless fruit flies. They are availabe at most TF shops. Remember that a 2G tank can go bad vey fast. I keep my Bettas in a 55g, 20g and 10g tank and they all do fine. They have lots of floating plants to hide in and feed on.

I used to keep and breed bettas by the hundreds and sold them. I lived in North Dakota then. Usually I collected live crustacea from all kinds of roadside ditches and ponds. However, this was only a seasonal source. I also fed adult and subadult bettas with earth worms cut in small convenient pieces, eggs of smelt, carp an other fish eggs I could obtain; small pieces of chicken and beef liver and lean muscle meat of chickens and fish were also fed to bettas. I gave them little chunks with forceps. The latter should be fed with caution so not to overpollute water in the tank. Now, I live in Virginia. Weather is hot and I simply cannot find natural water bodies with good density of small crustacea. I have to buy food for fish and what I buy is not rich enough to feed breeding fish. Recently, I picked another source. I feed my dogs with chicken parts, which I buy relatively cheap in 10 pounds bags in groceries. When I thaw the meat and leave it in shady place, carrion flies, mainly Lucilia species arrive and lay a lot of eggs. I collect eggs in small plastic tubes and bottles and store them in a freezer. All fish eats it eagerly. I do not keep bettas now, but I am sure they would eat this stuff well. Any stinky meat would attract flies and they will lay a lot of eggs for you. Dogs like stinky meat and it seems quite good for them.

Wow. I mean really wow. That's about two miles more than I am willing to go for any fish, or dog for that matter. Thanks for the possible suggestion but that's not one I'm willing to try.

LOL.My dog is raw fed,but I will not sit the meat out for the maggots.Thats just tooo ew for me.But I do culture grindals vinegar eels and hatch BBS and feed mosquito larvae.

Dogs will eat almost anything fed to them. The stinky meats not that good for them.It casn cause issues later down the road.

From experience, and what I've read, you have to remember that a bettas stomach is about the size of their eyeball. I've owned a few bettas and they really only eat about 1 or 2 pellets. (Obviously depends on the size of the pellets.) So dropping 3 in there should suffice. If he's hungry, he'll eat!

Bloodworms are a great food source of protein. This is important because betta fish carnivorous by nature, and require a large percentage of there food to be protein.

One of the other reasons to use this type of food is that betta fish just love them!! If you have not tried them you will see what I mean when you do. Most bettas will go nuts over bloodworms.

Thanks

I use all kinds of foods to feed my fish. I tried aphids, chopped lean beef, chicken and fish (salmon) and fish eggs. Small flies are eaten well. It is fun to try new food, especially live food. You can "do it at home", because it is perfectly safe.
