Look for a T5HO fixture. Google them, or look on Craigslist for cheap used fixtures. HO stands for High Output, and T5 refers to the diameter of the fluorescent bulb. Be careful though - high output lights in a non-planted tank can cause algae blooms.

The plecostimus (suckerfish) will take care of only the algae that grows on the tank walls - any algae like BBA or green water you will need other critters or means of control for.

The plants will be super happy, though. Did you find a fixture you like yet?

A common plecostomus will only eat so much algea and it isn't a good idea to think he will keep the tank clean with high output lights. You will probably find that he will stay hidden more in brightly lit tanks. He also needs wood. Do you have any in the the tank? He will make a cave in or under the wood that he will call home.

I got a rock cave and some plastic wood in the tank the plastic wood doesnt really make a cave though.

I only got a 10 gallon tank Ive been looking around for a bigger tank cause im pushing my limit really closely on being overstocked. I got 5 black skirt tetras and 5 glolight tetras. and 2 snails and the algae fish I think I am overstocked but they all look really healthy chase each other in the tank ive had the tank and them all for 2 months now and they are doing really good. I know I need a bigger tank though.

Yeah, for the ten gallon you're at capacity and will need to upgrade when they (especially the pleco) grow up.

The pleco needs regular old woody wood so he can rasp on it as part of his diet and make a home underneath it. My L177 Gold Nugget pleco defends his little cave and the rest of my critters have learned to steer clear.

Also, @Susan - my gf and I both have high-powered lights for our plants and the plecos come out sparingly during the day, but all the time at night.

You can most definitely change out the bulbs! You won't be able to go any brighter, but you could trade out a 10,000K or 6700K bulb for a 5500K bulb which will help your plants more (it's a red light). OR you could swap out a 6700K for a 10,000K if you'd like to showcase your plants` and fish's colors more.

Turn off your light, let it cool, and pop the bulb out to read the specs on the bulb - is it a T8? What is its Kelvin rating (the K value I was mentioning, pertains to the color of the light emitted)? What's its power rating (in Watts or W)?

If your 10g has an incandescent screw in bulbs in the hood hood, try replacing the bulbs with 2 15w 6500k spiral bulbs from wall mart.
