1. Not entirely sure. If it's chemically inert I would assume it's safe, but to the extent of my knowledge the only metal potentially unsafe for aquariums is copper for it's ability to kill invertebrates like snails and shrimp.

2. Did you wash the carbon inserts? And did you just pour raw carbon into your filter, or did you put it in a mesh filter bag?

I washed the carbon like the directions said. and then used it but when i catually put it in the tank it is fine for a while and then it just puts out a fine dust.

2. as for the aluminum when i built the tank i got a hole of a bunck of cheap led flashlights and the tubes that make the bodies i figured if i hot melt glued them together they would make a great khiding place for some of the ghost shrimps i have. pardon my typos in adv.
1. Yeah, you need to have the carbon in a mesh filter bag. I think WalMart sells them for $0.50 apiece. Otherwise, no matter how good you wash the carbon some is gonna get in your tank.

2. Sounds like it might work, but don't quote me on it.

the carbon is in a set of panty hose that i bought for the purpose ... my setup is pretty cool in the short news of it i have two pumps, right now one of them pushes the water throught the carbon and the other one is pushing the water through a coffee filter. the coffee filter is very capable of pulling out the carbon "snow" i wonder if the actual pressure of the water comming from the pump is too strong and is actually turning the carbon to powder io know that for filter heads are high volume but are they low pressure? the pumps i ahve are from a windshield washer pump from a car. they work great real "high" volume they will cycle the whole 20 gal in 5 or less minutes. but they also have enough pressure at half there rated voltage to tear a coffee filter.

maybe the pressure moves the rocks and they grind against each other and produce fine dust?
