Default Amonia burn

Hey guys I need some advice, I am planning to babysit my friends fish(3 guppies and 1 platty) because my friend and her family are going away for 2 weeks. She told me that her fish started dying and she doesnt want the remaining 4 to die too. When I saw her fish, it seemed like the fish are suffering from ammonia burns because of the rotting fins and discoloration. Is it safe to throw them in my fish tank and is it contagious? thanks.

i wouldnt. even if it is from ammonia, it still leaves the their immune systems compromised, so they may also carry infections with them. if it is caused by some disease, you would be transmitting it to your tank. i would just do water changes.

Definately dont suggest adding them with yours. They need to be treated for fin rot too, sounds like the poor water quality has messed them up pretty bad.

As Auban says, water changes would be best.

Thanks for the very quick reply guys. I told her that I can only put them in a 2 gal fish tank that I have. I told her that that's her only option and I would try my best to keep them alive. How many times should I change the water?

In a two gallon,I would do so every day,or every other day at the very least.do you have her filter? If so it has some beneficial bacteria(or should)and you can place this on the two gallon to help keep things from going too bad too fast.Or get a five gallon plastic tote to keep them in until she returns.
