Default ALWAYS quarantine your new additions to Discus tanks!!!!

I learned the hard way this week :( I have been heartbroke the past two days. I lost my beloved discus. I added some Cardinal Tetras and Bristlenose plecos to my Discus community tank. I got over-zealous, and didn't QT the new additions.

One week later, my six 1.5 year old 4-5 inch babies are gone :( I have raised them from 1" and they were starting to really get full color, and wonderful personalities. It's all over now. 2 years of care and love and money and sweat...gone.

ALWAYS QUARANTINE NEW ADDITIONS!!! Don't learn the way I did.

Hello Jeff...

Very sad. I have several large tanks of Fancy Guppies and Corydoras and must say, I've never quarantined fish or plants before putting them into my tanks. I do know my fish and plant sources and only buy from one or two reputable places.

I'm a firm believer in periodically running a small amount of standard aquarium salt through my tanks to control disease causing bacteria and strengthen my fishes' immune system.

Contrary to popular belief, tropical fish, even those sensitive to salt, like Corydoras, will benefit from it. I don't use it all the time, I don't believe it's necessary, but I'll go out on a limb here and recommend it's use. I've used it off and on for several years and have never had a disease in any of my tanks.

Just one, humble reporter's opinion.

B

Yeah, I feel ya but I never took that step with discus, all new additions were put into a 55g for a minimum of 8 weeks with heat and salt.

Salt in moderation is good for all fish, the salt for FW tanks is not the same salt used anywhere else, its not even table salt nor marine salt. I use some from FRITZ that works fantastic for salt sensitive fish.
