I've always used Otos to clean the diatoms out of my tank. But this is my first tank with a sand substrate. Anyone think they'll eat it off sand?
Heck...will any algae-eating fish eat algae off of sand? It almost looks like it would be "hard" for the fish to do. |

Im not sure if anything will eat it though I dont see why not.If it bothers you and you cant get them to clean it off,you can hover a siphon just at it and it will come up that way.

Hello b....
Never heard of anyone having enough fish to control algae, not to say there isn't such a fish. I've had large tanks running for several years and never had an issue with algae, not sure why. I can tell you, I change 50 to 60 percent of the tank water every week, so nothing has time to build up before the next water change. I have a lot of fairly fast growing plants that take up a lot of nutrients and a lot of fish in the tanks. Also, I have a lot of snails in my tanks, good algae eaters. Don't know the specifics of your lighting, but maybe planting some Anacharis (needs good light), floating Water Sprite and Water Wisteria, varieties of Hygrophila, Pennywort and Hornwort will help. These are fast growers and will definitely require a lot of nutrients and may help control the algae. Just a thought. B
