Hello i have a freshwater aquarium and a lot of algae but is there some sort of light or something that kills algae and what is the best algae eater that isn't a fish because the most fish grow to large for my tank,

Add live plants to consume the nutrients instead of the algae.

You may have to kill the lights for awhile to kill off the algae. But once done the live plants should keep the tank algae free.

I use my own version of the Leiden method (named after the town).

search on beaslbob build here.

For plants I use (10g) 4-6 bunches of anacharis, 4-6 vals, 4 small potted types (crypts, small swords) and a single amazon sword.

for substrate I use 1" peat moss, 1" play sand, 1" pc select (or aquarium gravel).

basically you get the plants in, wait a week, add a fish, wait a week with no food being added, then stock up the tank and only feed a flake or two each day.

no filter, no water changes just the tank, substrate, plants, water, and fish.

Back in the late 70's I heard the leiden method was named after the public aquarium there that used the method. (I did notice your signature also. )

amazon swords are a great start. If you already have fish then add some more plants. the above instructions were for starting up a tank. But if you're past that then just add more plants and see how it goes.

You can control a lot of algae by managing your light times. How long are you leaving it on for?

Then I would clean off the algae that is present now, reduce time to 9-10 hours and see how it does. I you are still getting it, then go to 8. You'll find the spot where it either drastically slows or goes away completely.

Do you know what type of algae it is?

What I do is kill the lights and stop adding food for a few days until the algae dies off. then resume with less feeding and light duration. And very the light duration until the plants thrive and algae does not come back.

Okay. Not all is green. If you start getting black brush algae (BBA), hair, staghorn, or any other varieties, you'll have tougher times getting rid of it. Fish or type of algae eater cannot be your primary means of dealing with it.

Go with my strategy; if you can still see gravel, add more plants! Most plants though only need about 8 hours of light. Fast growing nutrient sucking plants will be your friends too.
