Some of you may know already that I am undertaking a project that required me to culture my own phytoplankton. Now that my phyto station is all set up and the cultures are growing nicely, I will be harvesting on a weekly basis (6-9 days on average). Cultures will be grown in various salinities from brack to sea.
Process: New cultures are started out with fresh, treated water. The water is filtered into 2liter growing bottles. A culture starter portion is added as well as 1ml of Micro Algae Grow. These bottles are placed into the culture station where they are constantly aerated under a constant light source. Harvesting: At the time of harvest, the 2liter bottle is removed from the station. The rigid air tubing is placed into a seperate jug to avoid contamination. The bottles are lightly shaken and ~ 1 liter is filtered out of each bottle into a 64oz bottle for storage. Fresh, treated and filtered water is then added back to the 2liter bottle along with 1ml Micro Algae Grow and placed back into the station. Storage bottles are capped, labeled with culture, salinity and harvest date and then placed into a refridgerator to keep longer. Bottles are lightly shaken twice daily to prevent settling on the bottom. Point of sale: At time of delivery, the cultures are once again filtered; this time into the 20oz. bottles for delivery/shipping. If a 64oz. is purchased, it will be filtered into a same size bottle. Pricing: 20oz / $4 each - 64oz / $10 each Cultures can be combined upon request. There is no additional costs for this. Local pickup/delivery can possibly be arranged in the Fredericksburg/Richmond areas. Shipping costs may vary due to weight and will be calculated at time of sale. If you would like additional details or information, please feel free to contact me. I'll glady answer all questions. PM or email at Jammer0816@gmail.com. Post will be updated with available cultures. Any cultures not used or sold will be destroyed via boiling. Thank You, James Phyto Culturing Station: ![]() |
