i have a 37 gallon tall tank and i was wondering what plants would thrive with medium gravel and not get uprooted by my cichlid. i would also like to know which lights would grow them, i currently have 3 amazon swords and i would like more variety. thanks for the help!

With your fish, you probably won't find to many plants that they won't destroy. Maybe java ferns or anubia, but that would be about it.

There are some cichlids that thrive in a planted tank such as angels, discus and rams. Then there are some cichlids that may tolerate plants to an extent such as convicts and firemouths... but then there are the cichlids that view plants as toys. Adult oscars fit into that realm. Java ferns, like Susankat was mentioning, are said to be bitter which is why fish don't bother them much. Plus they don't have huge water/fert requirements to grow. You may wish to give them a go!
