Default New Fluorescent Bulbs

Any one had luck using newer type of bulbs? I picked up 4 23 watts ( supposed to replace 100 watt ) They are 6500K. I bought 2 double flood light fixtures that I am going to take apart to fit into a custom hood for my 29 gallon. Any suggestions good or bad?

Those are CFLs and will do just fine.

So if your new hood will be using all four bulbs over a 29g, you are going to want to look at CO2 and fertilizers for your plants.

Yeah, I got the CO2 and the ferts, just wondering if there was any differance in the bulbs. Between the the bulbs on sale and the the flood lamp kits on clearance, I will have a little over 20 bucks in almost 100 watts of lighting

You'll want to look at the Kelvin rating on the bulbs. The lower the K rating, the better the bulbs will be for your plants. However, the lower the K rating, the more dull your tank will look. Between 5500K and 10000K is a good range, if you ask me.

IME 6500k spiral pig tail bulbs designed to screw into incandescent fixtures work great!!!!!

(just be sure for the watts per gallon you use the actual not the incandescent equilivant watts)

I put 4 23 watts on a 29 gallon and holy **** what a differance it made. The orange in my tiger barbs really sticks out now. I was thinking of ordering some lights when I set up the 250 gallon, now I think I will go this was with it.
