Most of the base of the plant is what i would consider unhealthy, it is very brown/rust colored. and wilty looking. With the addition of a CO2 supplement the top has grown about 5% and the color near the top is now very green, but what about the rest of the plant, is it going to come back? I cant trim it down right? as it propagates from shoots or am i thinking of the wrong plant...?



Oh yeah i will post pics but after lights on tomorrow morning, its not fair to wake a whole place up for a quick pic... ;)

Do you have it planted or floating?

Hornwort is a floating plant and will die when planted - I made the same mistake when I first got it. It was planted at the store, so I assumed I could plant it at home. It started to go brown and die, but when I let it float and trimmed off the dead part, it grew like mad! I used a string to anchor the plant to the tank lid so that it wasn't floating all over the place or getting pushed down into the water by the filter. Just make sure you rotate the corners that you float it in each week, so the same spots aren't getting shaded all the time, which can kill the plants below.

It can be planted if you choose and it shouldn't kill it. Many people grow it out of the substrate, although it doesn't root and most let it float. If the lower levels are doing worse than the upper levels this could signify that it is just doing better at the top because it is nearer to the light.

The plant is really only good for establishing a new tank.
