If I had that option I most certianly would!!! Grandma was on to something back then! On top of that she didnt have to worry about the food being contaminated or loosing its nutrious vitamines and mineralsduring processing. Something a lot of commecially canned and processed foods lack, but they arent lacking in chemical additives these days!

I started growing a lot of my food last year after all of the tainted veggies started showing up along with all kinds of wonderful chemicals from the things imported from China. Apparently the US doesnt farm very much anymore. Just the small little victory garden I have has cut my food bill considerably and for the better too I might add. I have noticed that my salads and meals are so much more flavorful as well.

If I had 5 or so acres to work with, much less 100, Its likely the only thing I would need from the store ever again is just the staples...flour, sugar, salt and coffee. It would be some work for sure and wouldnt be as convienent as running down to china mart, but as a woman I still think I could handle it.

Not to mention the second use for the mason jars -- room for plenty of betta fry!

You can never tell what the strategy of a major player like Wally world is. They think 2 or 3 steps ahead, and make decisions that sometimes seems rediculous to most of us, because they may be thinking 5 years ahead. Also they may be trying to tell us something, such as times in their opinion are only gonna get worse so maybe we better get way ahead now, but on the volume they operate on, its easier to slip it by, .25 cents at a time on an item that sells a lot, than big markups on big ticket items that dont sell very well right now anyway. Anyway...the grow your own veggies is a great idea, and even setting up a roadside booth to sell your excess to neighbors or just drive by folks will also add a little change to your pocket for that rainey day, which i think is about every day now.

You don't need that much land to grow veggies! I live on a lot or rather half a lot that measures 40 feet square and then the house sits on that too. I have my flowers but around them I plant sweet potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes, white potatoes, carrots, and all manner of beans. Every inch of it is used and I still manage to have a large zoysia grass lawn as well. Last year my mom and I harvested 2 bushels of sweet potatoes (nature's most complete food) and still have enough left to get us through until this years harvest. I went out and bought the largest freezer (chest type) that my basement would hold and have been doing canning for the last 30 years. It does pay off. We shop the local stores for meat rather than Walmart believe it or not it is cheaper there since Walmart does not have sales on their groceries...you have to get a price match and you may as well buy from the store that will support your hometown at that rate.

So while I do business at Walmart some, most of the food at my house is homegrown and processed. Hot days, yeah, but we probably eat better than a lot of people do who have to buy everything.

I am sorry, I love bettas but my mason jars are for food not fry.

I need to move to my farm. I am still living in the city because I have yet to build on my 40 acres. If I had 100 acres, it might have actually paid to crop it. Instead I have planted that smaller plot to hardwoods except the 2 acres that I held back for my future house and garden.
