So I was doing my weekly water change today and I took off the lid to my aquarium, turned off my filter, and turned off my heater. Then all of a sudden one of my white clouds jumped out of the tank.
Of course he couldn't land in a convenient place such as the desk my tank is on. Instead he decided that behind my desk where I couldn't get to him was a good place. I had to move my desk freaking out my other fish and snail in order to save him. All is well now however, I finished up my water change after I got him back in the tank and made a slight modification to the tank. I put some magic the gathering cards I have lying around over spaces (when the lid is on) that they could possibly jump out of. So at least when the lid is on I won't need to worry about it. Anyone else have any stories like this lol. |

Oh, wow! That's pretty weird! I'm glad he's OK, though! :D
Actually, I have two stories related to this: I once brought home a blue micky mouse platy and was acclimating her in an open container floating in the water when she jumped out. She was just a whitish flash, and then gone! We looked all around for her; around the stand, behind the dresser next to it... She was nowhere. Then we saw her in the tank, hiding in a corner. She had just barely missed landing outside the tank! Also, when I was working for PetsMart, a guy came in to get a tiger barb to add to his school. He wanted a large one, which was in one of the tanks on the top level of the fish wall, so I got on the ladder to net the fish. Just as I netted the thing, it leapt out of the tank, clean over my head, and landed with a SPLAT on the floor. We looked at it for a moment, and I hurried to put it back into the water. It sort of hovered there for a minute, shoot itself, and went along swimming... And it lived long after that! I got the customer another barb, but that one tiger barb--the biggest in the tank--continued living there until I quit working there four or five months later!

My fiance and I were at a pet store in Rochester, MN. We fed the piranhas for a dollar and looked at all the driftwood... ya know normal stuff. Then we decided to look at the other fish, when we came to the oscars. Just babies, but there was a lot of them. Now I just have to say, my fiance is a boy, like 12 year old boy... he never grew up even though he is almost 28. So when he discovered that the oscars are crazy attracted to his wiggling finger on the glass he was pretty impressed. He was even more impressed when he opened the lid and all the fish were freaking out hardcore! I was just about to tell him that they bite when he put his finger just above the tank and a fish jumped out and fell onto the floor from 6 feet up! I was stunned, he was stunned but the fish wasn't! It was floppin all over, and Nick just stood there, I was like "Grab him, grab him!" So he attempted a few times and finally got him in. We pretty much almost ran out of that store! Another time we had a mollie jump out onto some receipts on the floor. Our cat still stalks that place. I suppose she can smell her or something.

LOL She's waiting for it to happen again! My mom had a dog like that; one day at a family get-together, my grandpa dropped his hamburger. The dog just so happened to be sitting beside him, looking up, and the burger patty fell right into his mouth! After that, he followed Grandpa EVERYWHERE.

That poor fish could have easily died if you left it out any longer. Have to be more careful next time

One of my local LFS had a jumper.
It was a 20 inch arrowanna, that customers used to come in and buy mice to feed to it. They kept it in a 250G with heavy glass lids that were weighted down with chunks of slate rock. Apparently some kind of insect landed on or flew around one of the tank lids. He jumped so hard he knocked the lid aside, knocked the slate on the floor, and they found him the next morning about 12 ft away on the floor.
